The Music Association Of Auckland Quartet Composition Competition

09Sep Auckland Philharmonia Hall

Competition Result with 2 First Prizes [first equal]

First Prize Winner: Harry Peirse ※Caprice§ 每 Tanya Li [MAA Erhu] Sam Loveridge [violin] Rachel Fagan [cello] Harry Peirse [Piano]

Harry wrote ※Caprice§ especially for this competition. The piece employs jazz chords and rhythms and also uses the flate-three pentatonic scale in deference to the Chinese instrument, the erhu, used in this piece. Piano cello and violin act as a rhythm section for much of he piece, with the erhu carrying the melody. In the middle section the melody is frequently shared by the three string instruments, creating some very polyphonic pgrases, and only the piano supplies the accompaniment.

First Prize Winner: Rebekah Mapson ※Ritual Dance§ 每 Hayley Reid [flute] Jenny Lui [violin] William Yu [MAA Yanqin] James Tu [Bongo]

※Ritual dance§ is a piece that combines the idea of a traditional Chinese Fan Dance and the rhythmic, ritualistic dances of a Maori tribe. The flute of this piece represents the complex, yet elegant movements of the Chinese dancer, while the bongos, violin and the yanqin represent the meticulous, strong nature of the traditional Maori Warriors. As the different instruments parts interwine and imitate each other, it symbolizes the bringing together of two very different cultures.

MAA Special Recommendation: Tian Yi Lu ※Feng Wu§ 每 Tanya Li [MAA Erhu] Joy Yang [Violin 1] Lily Yeh [Violin II] Jesberry Hartono [cello]

Using this competition for an excuse to compose for fun, Tian-yi has thoroughly enjoyed writing for an instrument from her homeland, China, keeping in mind that the last time she tried compose Chinese music was when she was five and tried to improvise using the black key of her piano. As an Asian Kiwi, Tian-yi*s Feng Wu, or Wind Dance brings together both oriental and western flavours and jumps from pure lyricism to delightful effervescent fervor.
