NEW Adult Music Appreciation Class
beginning 9th May, 2007.

This new class will look at the orchestra.
Limited number of places in the class.

In addition to its pre-tertiary programme, the Academy of Music presents open age evening classes which aim to provide a friendly and stimulating atmosphere in which to broaden knowledge and appreciation of classical music. No prior knowledge is assumed.

Music Appreciation 2 covers:

The tutor is a well known composer and educator, Dr Leonie Holmes.  Leonie has spent many years combining composition and private teaching with the teaching of creative music in schools, along with a year as Composer-in-Residence with the Auckland Philharmonia in 1997 and the Manukau City Symphony Orchestra in 2005.  She is a staff member of the School of Music, and Director of the Academy of Music, at The University of Auckland. Recent performances of her works include The Journey, for massed choir and orchestra, commissioned for the opening of the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre, Manukau City, and Frond for orchestra, performed by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra during the Asia-Pacific Festival in Wellington, February 2007.

Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra in NZ Exchange Programme

You and your students are invited to attend a free exchange session in Auckland with the world renowned Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (HKCO) on Wednesday, September 12.

The exchange session, in the Raye Freedman Arts Centre, will involve members of the HKCO sharing information on the history and characteristics of orchestras in China, as well as introducing and demonstrating a number of Chinese instruments.

The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra will also give a short performance and the public is welcome to attend the session, which is free. It has been jointly organised by the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office in Sydney, the Asia New Zealand Foundation, the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, The Music Association of Auckland and the Raye Freedman Arts Centre. The HKCO is visiting New Zealand as part of a programme to promote Chinese music to a wider audience.

The Orchestra was founded in 1977 and is the only professional, full-sized Chinese orchestra in Hong Kong. It has an establishment of 85 musicians, who perform in the four sections - bowed-strings, plucked-strings, wind and percussion instruments.

While deeply rooted in its Chinese cultural heritage, the Orchestra has a repertoire that includes both traditional folk music and contemporary full scale works. It also explores new frontiers in music through commissioning works of different types and styles.

Over the years, the Orchestra has commissioned more than 1,700 original compositions and arrangements from all over the world.

Under the leadership of its Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Yan< Huichang, the Orchestra has been performing at many world-famous venues and international festivals as the Cultural Ambassador of Hong Kong.

It has performed in Australia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Mainland China, Taiwan, Macao, Canada, the United States, Holland, Austria, Germany, England, France, the Czech Republic and Ireland.

The Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra has also been deeply involved in the research and development of Chinese musical instruments, which will be shown at the exchange session.

Top Chinese musicians ride Oriental Express to New Zealand

June 2007

Highly acclaimed Chinese string quartet, Qing Mei Jing Yue, will tour New Zealand in late July under the auspices of the Chinese Ministry of Culture's Oriental Express programme, which is designed to introduce China's top young musicians to international audiences.

An all-women quartet, which takes its title from the names of its four members, Qing Mei Jing Yue will play in Wellington, Kapiti and Nelson before taking part in the Christchurch Arts Festival on August 1 and 2.

Fan Weiqing (Qing), Yu Hongmei (Mei), Yang Jing (Jing) and Liu Yuening (Yue) will perform both contemporary and traditional pieces for their New Zealand audiences on four well-known Chinese stringed instruments --the guzheng , e rhu, pipa and yangqin.

Many of the pieces, including Touched by Rain, High Mountains Flowing Water, Moonlit night on a Spring River, and Waterscape Silhouette, evoke the beauty of the Chinese landscape.

A contrasting dulcimer solo piece in Sichuan style depicts the scene of an ancient battlefield.

Qing Mei Jing Yue first drew attention through its fresh take on compositions for traditional stringed instruments after its debut chamber music concert at the Beijing Concert Hall in the autumn of 1996. The Quartet has since performed with great success at major music festivals in Germany, Beijing, Hong Kong and Prague. It attended the Chicago World Music Festival and toured in the American mid-west in September 2005.

As well as performing their adaptations of classical traditional pieces, these young musicians play their own compositions. In recognition of their versatility and skill, contemporary composers have written pieces exclusively for the Quartet, giving a refreshing and surprising breadth and depth to its repertoire. Noted composer, Minoru Miki acts as the Quartet's artistic adviser.

The quartet's New Zealand tour is being facilitated by the Chinese Embassy and Capital Theatre Productions, in association with Asia New Zealand Foundation and the Christchurch Arts Festival. In 2005, the Oriental Express programme brought leading young Chinese violinist, Li Chuanyun to New Zealand, and last year award-winning pianist Sun Yingdi made a six-centre tour.

AUCKLAND INTERNATIONAL PIANO FESTIVAL
22 June - 1 July 2007

Following last year's enormously successful and critically acclaimed inaugural Auckland International Piano Festival an even more ambitious series of concerts and master classes has been planned for ten days from 22 June – 1 July 2007.

Festival Director Tamas Vesmas has gathered together a line-up of eminent International and New Zealand pianists each of whom will teach top New Zealand young pianists and also give celebrity recitals at the Raye Freedman Arts Centre.

The Festival's inaugural concert on Friday 22 June will be an unusual two-piano recital by Tamas Vesmas and Michael Houstoun featuring music by Brahms, Debussy and Saint-Saens. Among others engaged are Australian-born Piers Lane, a popular returning musician who will play an all-Chopin recital; Guillermo Gonzales from Spain and Stephen McIntyre from Melbourne. New Zealand artists appearing include Michael Houstoun, Richard Mapp and Auckland-trained, London–based Chenyin Li whose international career took off following her 2003 Royal Festival Hall debut sponsored by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

In an innovative move for the piano festival Tamas Vesmas has secured the participation of noted Romanian bass-baritone Ionel Pantea who will perform Schubert's complete Die Winterreise as well as taking a special master class for singers and accompanists. Vesmas himself will be the musical partner of his fellow countryman.

The undoubted climax of the Festival week will be a Piano Extravaganza on Sunday 1 July with four Steinway concert grand pianos on stage, played by up to eight pianists. Says Tamas Vesmas, “such a concentrated assemblage of talent enables us to programme very unusual repertoire which is sure to delight audiences at what will be the climax of the whole festival.”

Among other highlights of the Festival are a performance by Guillermo Gonzales of Albeniz's complete Iberia , a rarely performed work of enormous difficulty and brilliance. Gonzales has published his own edition of the work and performed it many times to great acclaim, also recording it for Naxos. Stephen McIntyre, from Melbourne, will play the challenging and rarely played Diabelli Variations by Beethoven as well as works by Ravel.

The Auckland International Piano Festival, presented in association with Kokako Concerts, is designed to offer talented young musicians the opportunity for concentrated study with eminent musicians. The public is able to book for celebrity recitals featuring often seldom heard repertoire and to observe master classes.

今年的 Michael Hill 國際小提琴大賽將于 6 月初在皇后鎮以及奧克蘭舉行，參加決賽的選手們有幸從該大賽 2005 年度冠軍得主 -- 中國小提琴家寧峰的傾情演出中獲取靈感。

Michael Hill 國際小提琴大賽是寧峰在 國際上贏得的縱多獎項之一﹐這些獎項激勵他穩步邁向國際舞台。去年寧峰在意大利舉辦的世界小提琴頂級賽事 - 第 51 界帕格尼尼國際小提琴大賽中榮獲冠軍。

寧峰 ，出生 於 中國四川成都， 四歲起在父親的熏陶下隨文有信老師學習小提琴。 5 歲 作 第一次公開演出。 1992 年至 1998 年就讀于四川音樂學院附中，跟隨中國著名小提琴教育家胡惟民教授學習。 1998 年進入英國皇家音樂學院，主攻小提琴專業演奏，師從國際著名小提琴演奏家和教育家胡坤教授。  

2005 年的 Michael Hill 國際小提琴大賽， 寧峰與 奧克蘭愛樂樂團的首次合作成功， 2006 年他重返新西蘭再次 與 奧克蘭愛樂樂團合作展開 APN News & Premier Series 凱旋之旅巡回演出。此外， 寧峰 還与新西蘭鋼琴家 Michael Houstoun 舉辦了一場獨奏音樂會，精彩絕倫。

6 月 21 日，星期四晚上 8 時， 寧峰 將再次重返奧克蘭市政廳 與 奧克蘭愛樂樂團為奧克蘭的廣大觀眾送上 聖 －桑 [ Saint-Sa?ns] 《 B 小調第三小提琴協奏曲》。法國著名指揮家 Emmanuel Joel-Hornak 將會擔任這場 由 APN 謀體集團獨家贊助 的 Virtuoso Parade 音樂會指揮。

6 月 25 日，星期一晚上 6:30 ， 寧峰 和 Houstoun 在奧克蘭市政音樂廳舉辦另外一場獨奏音樂會 - 奧克蘭愛樂樂團 及 Lion Foundation Twilight Chamber 音樂會 系列 聯合贊助 。  

這場室內音樂會曲目選自莫扎特 [Mozart] 、理查 . 施特勞斯 [R. Strauss] 、普朗克 [Poulenc] 和帕格尼尼 Paganini] 等大師之作。帕格尼尼在 寧峰 的藝術之路扮演着重要的角色 : 在以帕格尼尼命名的小提琴比賽 - 獲得 帕格尼尼大賽金獎后， 寧峰 獲邀使用帕格尼尼最喜愛 並 伴隨了他一生的一把小提琴演出，這是一把 1743 年由制琴大師瓜內里 - 德 - 吉蘇（ Guarneri del Gesu ）制作的小提琴，名為 “ 大炮 ” 。

寧峰簡歷 ：

寧峰 1981 年出生於四川成都，四歲起在父親的熏陶下隨文有信老師學習小提琴。 1992 年寧峰考入了四川音樂學院跟隨我國著名小提琴教育家胡惟民教授學習，在校學習期間，曾參加了 1995 年在英國達亭頓舉行的國際夏季音樂學校，受到了國際著名小提琴家胡坤和 R- 里奇 的指點。 1997 ， 1998 夏天，寧峰連續兩年入選代表中國的 7 名小提琴學生參加了在加拿大卡爾加里市舉辦的 “ 晨興音樂橋 ” 中加國際夏令營，他的演奏得到了加拿大專家們的高度讚賞。 1997 年，寧峰參加了在日本高崎舉行的第五屆國際高校生藝術比賽，在 200 多名參賽選手中脫影而出，獲得了綜合大獎和小提琴組第一名。受比賽組委會邀請，寧峰於第二年在日本東京，京都，大阪，高崎等地演出，並在 JVC 勝利公司錄制了唱片。

1998 年秋，寧峰被世界著名音樂學府 - 英國皇家音樂學院以全額獎學金錄取，跟隨我國著名小提琴演奏家，教育家胡坤教授繼續深造。在胡坤教授的精心教導下，寧峰在小提琴演奏和音樂修養等各個方面都取得了長足的進步。 1999 年初，大師梅紐因勳爵在皇家音樂學院舉辦了巴赫作品大師班，在聽完寧峰演奏的巴赫 - “ 恰空 ” 舞曲後，大師評價他的演奏 “ 幾乎如我想象的一般完美！ ” 。緊接着，梅紐因邀請了寧峰參加了在德國舉行的 “ 梅紐因基金會 ” 的慶典音樂會。 1999 年三月八日，大師在生命中的最後一封推薦信里寫到： “ 他（寧峰）的演奏深深地打動了我 ...... 他的音樂天賦與才能將使他的前途一片光明。 5 天以後，大師在柏林與世長辭了。

1999 年末，寧峰在法國巴黎舉行的 “ 蒂博國際小提琴比賽 ” 中獲得了 “ 弗朗索 - 斯卡博 ” 獎。 2000 年在英國舉行的 “ 梅紐因國際青年小提琴比賽 ” 中獲得了第二名，一個星期後，寧峰又獲得了英國皇家愛樂協會頒發的 “ 艾 . 安德森 ” 獎。 2001 年 2 月，寧峰獲得了 “ 皇家音樂學院–威格莫獎 ” ，並於 6 月 4 日在這座世界知名的室內樂音樂廳 - 威格莫廳里舉行了音樂會。同年五月，寧峰在比利時布魯塞爾舉行的 “ 伊莉莎白女皇國際音樂比賽 ” 這項世界頂級音樂賽事中，與近百名優秀年輕小提琴家經過五個星期的角逐，獲得了第五名，這也是繼其導師胡坤教授於 1985 年獲得第四名以來，中國大陸選手取得的最好成績。兩個月之後，寧峰又獲得了 “ 倫敦奧利多里國際小提琴比賽 ” 第一名。 2002 年，寧峰獲得了英國 “ 音樂家慈善基金會 ” 頒發的 “ 艾 . 英國 ” 獎學金，並在莫斯科舉行的 “ 柴可夫斯基音樂比賽 ” 中獲得了現代作品演奏優秀獎。在皇家音樂學院學習的五年里，由於其出色的表現，寧峰還獲得學院頒發的 “ 羅斯 ” 獎和 “ 維 . 派瑞 ” 獎。 2003 年在學業結束時，寧峰成為了皇家音樂學院建校近兩百年來的第一個以滿分成績畢業的學生。畢業以後，寧峰被授予了 “ 皇家音樂學院會員（ ARAM ） ” 封號，這一封號是專門授予給在專業上取得優異成績的皇家音樂學院畢業生的。

2003 年 9 月，寧峰在德國漢諾威舉行的 “ 約阿西姆國際小提琴比賽 ” 中獲得了第三名，隨後他被柏林音樂學院錄取，跟隨安 . 瑋特哈絲教授學習，攻讀演奏家學位。同年 11 月，他獲得了 “ 第 13 屆伊 . 高爾法斯小提琴比賽 ” 的第一名。 2005 年，寧峰參加了 “ 第 13 屆德意志音樂器基金會比賽 ” ，賽後，基金會免費向寧峰提供了一把珍貴的 1756 年製作的瓜達尼尼小提琴。

2005 年 6 月，寧峰在新西蘭舉行的 “ 邁克 . 希爾 ” 國際小提琴比賽中獲得了第一名。隨後，在中國文化部的新聞網頁上寫到： “ 6 月 11 日的奧克蘭之夜，由於寧峰的獲勝而成為名副其實的中國之夜。這位來自中國成都的天才少年以精湛純熟的技藝和充滿激情的表演，徹底征服了現場的觀眾和裁判，贏得了新西蘭 2005 麥克希爾國際小提琴比賽（ Michael Hill International Violin Competition 2005 ）的第一名。…… . 寧峰的演奏技法純熟，自然流暢，頗具大家風范，不論是演奏技巧還是藝術表現都更勝一籌。他的演出剛一結束，音樂廳內就立即象起了經久不息的熱烈掌聲，觀眾和裁判已被他出色的表演所征服，連他此前的其他對手也從觀眾席上起立，為他精彩的表演鼓掌喝彩。 ”

2005 年 9 月，寧峰在小提琴界最高榮譽之一，意大利熱那亞舉行的第 51 屆帕格尼尼國際小提琴比賽中榮獲了金獎和兩個單項特殊獎，並應邀用意大利國寶 - 帕格尼尼自己的小提琴 - 1743 年制 瓜內里 - 德 - 吉蘇 “ 大砲 ” 小提琴演奏。
